For Authors

Basics

Authors: RIHA Journal invites submissions from researchers in the history of art and related disciplines, both from members of the RIHA institutes and from researchers who are not affiliated with any RIHA institute.

Topics: Contributions on any topic in the history and theory of art and visual culture are welcome.

Type of Articles: Only research articles are published, no book or exhibition reviews (exception: comprehensive research reviews). Articles should be original and innovative, offering new research material and/or new perspectives. Besides single contributions, RIHA Journal also publishes collections of articles on particular research topics (Special Issues).

Publication Status: Only unpublished manuscripts are accepted.

Languages: Articles in one of the five languages authorized by the Comité International d'Histoire de l'Art (CIHA), i.e. in English, French, German, Italian, or Spanish ("CIHA languages"), are strongly preferred. However, if authors, or the relevant RIHA institutes, have difficulties with arranging translations, articles in other languages spoken at the RIHA institutes are also welcome. Moreover, with regard to articles in non-CIHA languages, RIHA Journal encourages parallel publications in both the original language and in translation (e.g., Polish-English).

Length: Preferred article length is between 30,000 and 80,000 characters (including footnotes and spaces).

Costs: RIHA Journal does not charge article processing or submission fees. Please note, however, that reproduction or permission fees for images, archival fees or other charges by third parties are to be paid by the authors themselves.

Peer Review: Manuscripts that qualify for closer consideration undergo a double-blind peer-review process by at least two experts. Peer reviewers are selected by the editors of RIHA Journal. The peer review process usually takes four to eight weeks. Authors are kindly asked to prepare their manuscripts for blind reviewing. In particular, any first-person references to their own publications should be removed. If an article is accepted for publication, the names of the approving reviewers will be published as well.

Dates and Schedules: Articles are released not in periodical issues but one at a time. Suitable manuscripts are usually published within four to six months from submission. Submissions of manuscripts and proposals for Themes in Focus are welcome any time.

License: Unless otherwise arranged with the author, articles are published under the terms of the Creative Commons License CC-BY-NC-ND 3.0.

Archiving: Long-term archiving is provided by the German National Library (DNB). Each article has a URN (to be found in the metadata) warranting the article's persistent identifiability and accessibility in the web.
