Biography:

Martin Berger is professor and graduate director of the Visual Studies Program at the University of California at Santa Cruz. He is the author of Man Made: Thomas Eakins and the Construction of Gilded Age Manhood (2000), Sight Unseen: Whiteness and American Visual Culture (2005), and the forthcoming Seeing through Race: A Reinterpretation of Civil Rights Photography (2011).
